Disappearing Forests
There is no doubt that the forests have been a vital role in human life for thousands
years. According to Greenpeace Report, in the world approximately 1.6 billion people’s
life rest on forests and 60 million native people for their livelihood (2009)(p1) . But some
illegal incidents harm to forests which are important for people. Illegal logging is one of
these situations. There are several reasons for illegal logging such as weak governance and
laws. Whatever the reasons may be, illegal logging negatively impacts on all organisms
and economy: it devastates environmental impact on ecological balance, damaging society
Firstly, ecological balance is damaged by illegal logging. The forests are cleared by
people who need to timber for housing or furniture. When the forests are cleared, the habitats
of plant and animal species are cleared and ecological balance is damaged. Some animals
such as orangutans face a big threat because of this situation. Besides, as soon as ecological
balance is changed, the climate could be affected by this variation. D.Brack stated, “In
reducing forest cover, illegal logging impairs the ability of land to absorb carbon emissions
speeding up climate change,” (2007) (dq1) . As a result, there are serious environmental
impacts from illegal logging.
Secondly, illegal logging results in problem among people and could be illegal source.
There are a lot of people taking advantages of forests. As some people prefer legitimate
products, some people prefer illegality such as illegal logging. This situation creates conflict
such as violence, crimes and human rights abuse between the legal people and illegal people,
Furthermore, illegal logging assist to other crimes. Greenpeace stated that money gained from
illegal logging fund for wars, money laundering and other organises crimes (2009) (p2) .
Finally, illegal logging leads to critical financial loss in timber producing government
revenue. Timber trading is very important source of income for some countries having a high
forest cover. If there is illegal logging in these countries, the revenue obtained from timber
trade is low because of unpaid taxes and charges. Greenpeace stated, according to The World
Bank, price of illegal logging is approximately US$10-15 billion loss revenue per year in
timber manufacturing countries (2009) (p3) .
of cheapness of illegal logging, global markets are distorted. To sum up, illegal logging
negatively impact to timber trade markets.
In conclusion, the consequences of illegal logging bring great destruction to all
organisms and economy: forests and habitats of plant and animal vanished, climate change
speeding up, conflict in society and government economy destroyed. If the people do not
want to worry about their future, they should keep away from illegal logging.
Causes1) As the population rises, becomingmore numerous landless peasants2) Being cheaper of illegally loggedtimber than legitimate products3) Weak governance4) Corruption in timber producingcountries5) The failure of governments inconsumer countries to ban theimport of illegally and destructivelylogged timber6) Allowing immoral loggingcompanies7) Weak governing laws over thetimber trade
8) Increased pressure on the
national economy9) Unpaid taxes and charges10) Poor law enforcement11) Chances of detection andpunishment may be very small
Effects1) Becoming cleared habitats of plant andanimal species2) Devastating environmental impact onworld’s forest, on biodiversity and onclimatic changes.3) Creating social conflict with indigenousand local populations and leads toviolence, crime and human right abuses.4) Converting forested land intoagricultural land5) US$10-15 billion per year in lostrevenue
6)Speeding up climate change
7)Distorted global timber market8)Exploit ancient forest9)Undermines incentives for sustainableforest management10) Exploiting ancient forest11) Funding wars, money laundering and
other organised crimes
